Can you install a chandelier on a two-story or stairwell ceiling?

Do I need a special ceiling box for a heavy fixture?

Often, yes. A heavy fixture or any fan-rated need requires a box built to carry that weight, not a standard light box. We check what is there and upgrade the box if the fixture calls for it, because that box is what keeps the fixture safely in the ceiling.
