Yes, when the enclosure is built for it. A proper generator enclosure is ventilated for cooling air and exhaust, which is completely different from running a generator in a closed shed or garage, which is never safe. We install enclosures designed for running generators and place them away from windows, doors, and vents.
How far from the house does a portable generator need to be?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises running a portable generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors, and vents. We plan the enclosure location around that guidance and your generator's own instructions, and we recommend working carbon monoxide alarms inside the house.
Can an enclosure make my portable generator work like a standby generator?
Close to it. With the generator kept in an enclosure and connected to an inlet and interlock, backup power is a few minutes away instead of a project in the storm. It is not automatic like a standby unit, since you still start it and switch over, but for many homes it is the best value in backup power.
